What if I told you that creating a website that generates a consistent client stream to keep your business going long-term is completely doable, even without a background in business or design? It’s true! A beautiful site is great, but… it’s not the only thing. Here, I’ll share 3 ways you can design your website with strategy, so your business will attract more dream clients and achieve optimal results.

Design for Results - Tip Number One:

1.   Define your target audience & ideal client

When you start planning your website project, a first step is to consider who it is you are trying to attract in the first place.

A website designed with the end user in mind is more likely to attract the clients dream of, and what’s-more, increase the number of converting visitors (i.e., email subscribers, purchasers, etc.). So, before even opening your website platform, get out a piece of paper or your laptop and think about the ins and outs of the individual you would like to attract.

Questions you can consider:

  • Demographic information:

  • How old are they?

  • Do they gender identify?

  • Where do they live?

  • What is their career & income?

  • What challenges do they want to overcome? How can I help?

  • What are their dreams? Can I help them achieve them?

  • How do they talk? Are they casual or more formal?

  • How do you relate with your audience?

Once you have a general idea in mind of who you are trying to attract, take it one step further and create a specific ideal client avatar. Give them a name, define their age, career, and specific needs. Then, note how you can connect with them and meet those needs, and what you have in common.

As you create your website, use the ideal client you have created as the guiding force for your website’s overall content and design strategy. As you develop your website and business long-term, keep this person in mind every time you create any new content to ensure it will connect and build a relationship with your audience.

Design for Results - Tip Number two:

2.   Design a brand style that connects with your ideal clients

Once you have defined who it is you are trying to connect with, the next step is to think about the brand that would most likely attract (and convert!) these visitors. Your website reflects you and what you can offer your ideal clients. The overall mood and feeling is determined by the brand style you select.

The brand style mainly includes an overarching theme that will then guide your specific color palette, font, and image selections.

Think of specific themes that would connect with your ideal audience. For example:

  • Natural

  • Moody

  • Energized

  • Happy

  • Classic

Use this theme to guide your color palette and font selections.

For example:

Theme: Energized

Colors: Happy and bright colors such as yellow, pink, light Blue

Font: Something with a bit of flair

These items will set the tone for your visitor’s entire experience with your website, so ensure that the overarching theme will connect with your ideal audience you created in the first step!

Design for Results - Tip Number three:

3.   Determine what content will be available and how it will flow

With a clear idea of who you are trying to connect with, and what sort of brand would attract them, you can begin mapping out your actual website. In this stage, you will begin to outline what content you need on your website and where exactly it will go.

Before you get too far in creating your website online, it is valuable to outline what pages you will need on your website, and what content you will need on each page.

For example, pages that most websites have include:

  • Home

  • About

  • Services/Offerings

  • Contact

  • Portfolio

  • Blog

Content that is typically on websites includes:

  • Descriptions about services offered

  • Information about who you are

  • Contact information

  • Descriptions about how you can help your client achieve their goals

  • A portfolio of work you have done in the past (if applicable)

  • Resources and informational material (such as blogs)

Start by outlining what content you want and need on your website, and then make a note of which page(s) this content would be best on. For example, information about you would be best on an About page, but can also be helpful on the Home page.

Once you have an idea of what pages you will need and where content will go, think about how this content will connect and how visitors will be guided through your website. Using the example from above, a short blurb about yourself on the Home page could have a button that connects to your About page. This will guide your visitor from the Home page to the About page.

The easiest way to ensure your website flows properly is to design it with your ideal client in mind. Pretend you are your ideal client while you are mapping out the content and ask yourself if it is intuitive and makes sense.

And there you have it! Three actionable steps to strategize your Squarespace site for optimal results! Once you implement these tips, increased traffic and higher conversion rates will follow.
